Abstract

This article is principally devoted to a presentation of state level educational statistics on the elderly population for 1960, 1970, and 1975. Following a brief description of an economic perspective that incorporates the level of educational attainment as a strategic variable in an explanatory model of social and economic behavior, several tables of state and national level educational statistics for the elderly population are presented. Substantial differences in state, sex, race, and age-cohort levels of educational attainment are shown to exist. Educational statistics from the 1960 and 1970 decennial censuses are recategorized to allow for comparisons with state level estimates of median years of school completed as computed from the spring 1976 survey of income and education tapes.
