Abstract
To the Editor: We report that the bacillary angiomatosis agent, BA-TF, described by Relman and colleagues,1 is very closely related to but distinct from Bartonella bacilliformis. Our evidence is based on an analysis of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence. We used the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify the 16S rRNA gene of B. bacilliformis (strain NCTC12138) and then used linear PCR sequencing of the product2 to obtain over 90 percent (1401 bases) of the 16S rRNA gene sequence. This was aligned with other available eubacterial sequence data,3 and regions of ambiguity were removed to ensure that.
