Abstract

We have used a system of polyclonal B cell activation to assess the suppressive effect of BM cells on proliferation and differentiation of B cells. In these studies we found that B cell proliferation induced by either LPS or anti-Ig (± T cell supernatants (SN) containing BDGF) is not affected by the addition of BM cells, whereas IgM antibody secretion induced by SN containing BCDF(μ) is strongly inhibited. These data suggest that BM cells do not inhibit clonal expansion of B cells but rather suppress terminal differentation induced either by a mitogen or by T cell-derived lymphokines.
