N1 - Funding Information: studying mathematics at university from the careers advisor who suggested that it might lead to becoming an actuary. That did not sound at all interesting! I had a friend who was planning to get a medical degree, and, somewhat casually, I decided to follow in that direction instead. After 2 years of preclinical training at St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School, there was an option to do an extra year of science before the clinical years of training and obtain a Bachelor’s degree. Students could do the year in physiology, anatomy, psychology, or even the history of medicine, but apparently no one had previously asked to do it in mathematics. I asked around the different colleges within London University if I could do statistics, and they all said “Absolutely not!” So, I wrote to 3 dozen US universities. A lot did not reply, some replied and said “It’s not possible,” and Harvard wrote effectively, “Send some money and we’ll consider it.” But I did get one positive response, from George Washington University. My medical school was unhappy, questioning the relevance of statistics to medicine, and would not support my application for UK government funding from the Medical Research Council. However, the head of Community Medicine at St Thomas’s, the late Walter Holland, heard about my plan and said that he knew the people in statistics at George Washington University. It turned out, something I had not realized when I wrote initially, that it had a very strong biostatistics department, which had been set up by the late Jerome Cornfield who
