Receptor-mediated endocytosis is a general biological process by which animal cells take up selected macromolecules from extracellular fluid. These molecules bind to cell surface receptors and enter cells when the plasma membrane invaginates and pinches off to form an endocytic vesicle. Mutations that disrupt the receptor-mediated endocytosis of plasma low density lipoprotein are a frequent cause of atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction in man.
