Abstract

Complete analyses of proton magnetic resonance spectra are reported for three ethylene phosphites and for ethylene sulfite neat, in benzene, and in chloroform. The vicinal H-C-C-H and P-O-C-H coupling constants indicate that the ethylene phosphites appear to prefer twist-envelope conformations. This result may be generally applicable to the conformation of five-membered rings.
