Abstract
The cancer most often encountered in the oral cavity and oropharynx is squamous cell carcinoma, originating in the epithelial lining covering these body cavities. Therefore, this article will be exclusively devoted to this tumor type, with the less frequently occurring salivary gland tumors being covered in another article. In the oral cavity, abuse of alcohol and smoking are the main etiologic agents whereas in the oropharynx, this role is taken by the human papilloma virus (HPV) making cancer at this site primarily a sexually transmitted disease. Because of profound differences between oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, each of them will be discussed in a separate section.
