Abstract
Several types of molecules related to classical class I and II antigens of the MHC have been recently discovered. At the same time we have learnt more about the functions of non-classical (class lb) antigens. This has shed light on the possible evolutionary origins and the likely roles that these molecules may play in the immune response.
