Abstract

For decades, ranchers in central Idaho were puzzled by a mysterious birth defect in their flocks of sheep. A percentage of their lambs, ranging from 1 % to 20 %, were born with only one eye. The Poisonous Plant Research Laboratory of the US Department of Agriculture started to investigate this malformed lamb disease in 1954.
