Abstract
The socioeconomic impact of hearing loss dictates increased physician understanding of this malady. The feeling of futility must be abandoned and the diagnostic challenge met. An awareness of the underlying pathophysiology and of the multiple causative factors involved in hearing loss provides a solid foundation on which to base thorough evaluation, diagnosis, and successful management. A diagnostic protocol for deafness has been included.
