N2 - Ultrasound can be limited by several factors in pregnancy including maternal obesity, oligohydramnios, fetal position, or occasionally the mature fetal skeleton. Fetal motion is a significant handicap in MRI affecting image quality and fetal anatomic detail. Fetal motion is minimal in oligohydramios, allowing the utilization of MRI tissue characterization potential for additional anatomic detail. The capability of MRI to quantitate fetal fat can allow the differentiation of severe intrauterine growth retardation from a structural abnormality as the cause for the oligohydramnios. The following case report illustrates how MRI in oligohydramnios can be complementary and even diagnostic in the appropriate clinical setting.
