Abstract
To the Editor: The four articles under the title “Sounding Board” in the March 24 issue1234 contain important background information and thoughtful commentary on the recommendations of the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Emergency Services in New York. It is clear that supervision of house officers can and should be strengthened and their work hours more carefully regulated. However, the problem goes much deeper. Numerous factors have gradually made the jobs of house officers more difficult. I believe that many of these, at least in New York State, are related to an overregulated hospital system that has been inadequately financed.
