Abstract
The authors begin with a brief historical overview of the influence of language on cognition. Terminology imperative to both clinical and research settings in the field of cultural neuropsychology, specifically the interplay of language and cognition is reviewed. Models in the field of cognitive neuroscience and language theory serve as foundational tools in understanding the relationship between multilingual development and cognition. With these models as a foundation, a person-centered, tailored approach to the assessment of cognition in bi/multilingual individuals is examined with careful consideration of the myriad of moderating and mediating factors that impact documented disadvantages and advantages of language on standardized outcome measures. Research highlighting the cognitive networks and neural correlates of cognitive reorganization secondary to language acquisition and development across the lifespan is reviewed. The chapter closes with practical clinical considerations in the assessment of bi/multilingual individuals via an international, culturally-informed lens.
