Abstract

The future of lung transplantation is promising. Single-lung and double-lung transplantation are validd therapeutic options for selected patients with terminal pulmonary disease. Improved functional status and survival can be anticipated. Recent advances in patient selection, organ preservation, operative technique and post-transplant can have all contributed to improved results. Immediate graft failure and airway complications are no longer the major causes of death in most programs. Donor availability, immunosuppression and infection, however, all continue to challenge the current success and must be addressed.
