note = "Funding Information: Four patients with homozygous sickle cell disease had eerebrovascular accidents at 2 to 9 years of age. All patients subsequently received regular erythrocyte transfusions in a program designed initially to maintain the hemoglobin S level at <30% of the total hemoglobin level. Patient 1 underwent spleneetomy at age 19 years, after 13 years of transfusion therapy.
