Abstract

Two patients with malignant hemangioendothelioma presented with hypertension and elevated plasma endothelin-1 levels. In both patients, changes in plasma endothelin-1 levels corresponded with changes in blood pressure, which returned to normal after surgical excision of the tumor. In one patient, recurrence of the tumor was associated with rising endothelin-1 and blood pressure levels. The endothelin-1 content and its messenger RNA level in this patient's tumor extract were higher than those from normal parts of the patient's skin. We conclude that the tumor secreted excessive amounts of endothelin-1.
