Abstract

A thermodynamic theory has been developed for capillary phenomena on a curved, arbitrary-shape interface between immiscible liquids. A geometric interpretation of the Gibbs and Hansen methods is examined. Formulas are derived for surface excesses of substance, entropy, and volume in two-phase liquid systems with a curved surface. As an example, the derived formulas are analyzed for the simplest two-component system α-β, where phase α has a spherical shape and is entirely enclosed within phase β.
