Abstract
Preterm birth is a public health priority. The impact of prematurity affects outcome not only of the newborn and infant, but also of this individual as an adult later, with significant mortality and short- and long-term morbidity; so preventing preterm birth would result in improved long-term health of the world. Research into mechanism, identifying markers, prevention and treatment is urgently needed. Optimal strategies for prevention and treatment will likely be those tailored to the underlying pathophysiology, which rely on the careful identification of risk factors and classification of preterm birth. Research on how to implement research findings and practice change will facilitate incorporation of advances.
