Abstract

To the Editor: In 1979 we presented in the Journal a case report of a clinical syndrome arising from the production of somatostatin by a malignant islet-cell tumor of the pancreas.* At that time, we speculated that the tumor was not infrequent and could easily be misdiagnosed in view of the associated common symptoms and insidious nature of its clinical presentation: diabetes mellitus, cholelithiasis, and mild diarrhea. However, experience over the past eight years indicates that the tumor is extremely rare, and fewer than 20 cases have been reported in the medical literature. Since our report, physicians from all over.
