Effects of diabetes mellitus on human ankle articular cartilage

Abstract

The intrinsic material properties of tibiotalar joint articular cartilage were examined in fifteen diabetic and fifteen non-diabetic fresh-frozen human cadaveric ankles. Non-diabetic cartilage had the largest aggregate modulus HA (1.32±0.56 MPa) and was found in the tibial anterior medial. The largest Ha for the diabetic group which was also found in the tibial anterior medial was 0.89±0.29 MPa. The biomechanical disparities between the diabetic and non-diabetic specimens suggest that clinically-observed cartilage pathologies may be associated with diabetes mellitus. This may be due to the fact that articular cartilage in diabetic subjects may no longer be functionally capable to withstand the strenuous joint environment.
