Diarrhea

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Diarrhea is the passage of unusually loose or watery stools with a consistency and increased frequency that is considered abnormal for the patient. Diarrhea is first classified as either acute or chronic, with most acute diarrhea being caused by gastrointestinal infections. The causes of chronic diarrhea vary by the age of the patient, the characteristics of the stool, and any associated signs and symptoms. Algorithmic approaches to the diagnosis of both acute and chronic diarrhea are presented and individual etiologies are reviewed, including common and rare disorders.
