Abstract
The development of variable stiffness external fixation for the treatment of fractures is based on requirements for early immobilization and late stress sharing with the fracture callus. This study demonstrates that a number of variables affect fixator rigidity, that several methods can be employed for progressively decreasing fixator stiffness and that the relation between increasing compressive stiffness of the fracture and bending in the sidebar as measured by strain gauges is hyperbolic.
