Abstract
It is important to expect and promote an attitude of shared responsibility between the physician and the patient (or family) for good health care. A verbal contract obtained through the process of informal informed consent should be developed by the physicians and the patient. Each person's role should be explained, and patient participation in the health-care plan should be encouraged. If the physician-patient relationship is founded on mutual respect and understanding, the basis exists for a therapeutic partnership.
