N1 - Funding Information: The issue of funding is obviously a major problem for both basic and clinical investigators, but it should also be of great concern to all AGA members, including gastroenterologists in community practice. NIH funding has for years provided the essential financial backbone for many university-associated gastroenterology divisions, which provide education and training for most of the gastroenterologists and hepatologists in the United States. In addition, this funding has directly or indirectly supported a larger proportion of the technical and therapeutic advances in the field. One of the things that makes medicine in the United States so unique is that it has been a consistent leader in innovation and on the cutting edge of both basic and clinical research. AGA members in clinical practice are interested in these new advances and proud of their research colleagues, who bring to meetings their latest ideas and data, which are often relevant to the clinical problems they face every day. Digestive Disease Week is a tremendous meeting in part because of the contribution of researchers who received funding from the NIH to support their work. Gastroenterology is a terrific journal because of the externally funded research that drives discovery and innovation in the field. Many of our best educators started their careers in research, and many of the best training programs provide exposure to research along with clinical training. Moreover, many of these investigators are at the same time teachers and professors at various medical schools, training future physicians, internists, and gastroenterologists about advances in the GI and liver fields.
