N2 - In randomized trials, screening mammography has been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality. There has been controversy, however, about the segment of the population that should be screened and the frequency at which screening should occur. This article details these controversial issues. The benefits that have been realized from mammography screening in overall breast cancer mortality and diagnosis of earlier stage cancers are also reviewed.
