Abstract
A low-cost bioimpedance measurement system was developed for the increasing household health care market. The system uses a four-electrode structure with a pair of exciting electrodes and a pair of sensing electrodes for the measurements. A 50 kHz sinusoidal constant current signal generated by a microcontroller unit together with a low-pass filter is applied to the exciting electrodes contacting the skin. The voltage across the sensing electrodes is measured to obtain the bioimpedance of human body. The system overcomes interference between the contact impedance and the electromagnetic wave. Measurements of leg-to-leg bioimpedance compare well with those obtained using a Tanita BF-639. The system produces repeatability, stability, and accuracy for body composition measurements as an effective household tool for body fat measurements.
