Barrett's esophagus: Weighing the risks

This complication of persistent GERD predisposes to the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma. While GERD may be controlled with proton pump inhibitors or antireflux surgery, Barrett's esophagus may warrant regular endoscopic surveillance.
