Recent reports have shown that these infections are prevalent throughout all arenas of sport, and efforts to decrease colonization of bacteria and fungi are now essential for preventing the development of SSTIs. » Education on cleansing and hygiene are a vital part of this process, and, as such, the team physician and the team athletic trainers play an important role in the education of the athlete and all members of the athletic team. » The impact of SSTIs on individuals and the athletic team may be severe and have the potential for notable consequences, including loss of playing time, hospitalization, and even surgery. Continued efforts to better understand and to prevent the development of SSTIs are paramount.
