Allergic fungal sinusitis

Allergic fungal sinusitis is a newly recognized, distinct disease entity that continues to pique the interest of allergists and otolaryngologists. As recognition of this condition has increased, its historical factors, physical signs, and radiographic characteristics have become better defined. Initial attempts at treatment used systemic and topical antifungal medications, but increasing evidence supports the idea that allergic fungal sinusitis is an immunologic rather than an infectious disease. Treatment has evolved to include surgical extirpation and immunomodulation. In this paper the recent literature is reviewed to provide an overview of our current understanding of allergic fungal sinusitis.
